Great quality over cost August 25, 2010 dirkraft Note you cannot comfortably wear these lying down. So don't buy these if you're planning on including that in your usage of these headphones.
The way you wear these feels a little uncomfortable at first, especially on my weird shaped head. But that's just tender skin that has never had a reason to become slightly more callous. After a few days of listening they have become quite comfortable, more so than any of the traditional spring-band headphones. I can wear them all day long without my ears feeling raw, or warm/sweaty.
The bass has decent punch and has not crackled except on the worst encodings which only my expensive/professional audio system has managed to filter out. I've noticed that these tend to produce noticeably less spill than other non-earbud headphones, so that's a plus if you use them in a rather quiet shared work place.
The wire also has a short bungee'd section to help keep incidental yanks from building over time and eventually breaking the soldering or actual wire threads in the casing. The wire itself is pretty soft and thus easy to tame. I have had more rigid wires that were harder to brush to the side, e.g. while working on a laptop.
As far as I can tell, these headphones produce acceptable battery drain. I've had headphones running on the same device (a portable cd player) that at the same listening volumes seemed to draw enough power to shorten the battery times by around 20% (so 10 hours to 8 hours).
The foam pads are starting to fall apart. But you can replace foam pads, and it's probably a good idea to replace them every couple of years because they do get unavoidably dirty after so much use. Does anyone have foam pad replacement recommendations that will fit these pretty snugly?
Bottom line, there isn't much that I've used in this price range that had comparable quality. I've had these for over 5 years. I've never had another cheap set of headphones that lasted much over a year.

I ordered the Philips HS500, which were on backorder...supposedly they became available, and 2 pair of headphones were on their way to my house. Problem was that the headphones sent (by Target) were the SHS5200. I returned them for a full refund, including the shipping...about $40 total, then reordered a single pair of the SHS5200 as part of another order, and since these were from Amazon directly, I didn't have to pay the shipping, and the price for one was $14.99. Might as well go right to the SHS5200 if you want a Philips set, sadly, the HS500 appear to be extinct.
Though I did rate the HS500 with 5 stars because the pair I used to have were very nice.
Best under 20 headphone September 25, 2009 D. Slack (NY) For behind the ear headphones they are great... for headphones under $20, these are amazing. good sound quality, fit, cord length, and I am not afraid to wear them during high intensity workouts since they arent expensive. well worth it.
WRONG ITEM SHIPPED. August 27, 2009 J. Brannon 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had several pairs of these headphones that have lasted me ten years, but the time came to replace them, so I turned to Amazon. I was sent the wrong pair (a much cheaper model worth roughly half to a quarter of the price, depending on where you buy them). Not only did the pair break after two weeks of use, but I spent nearly $30 with one-click ordering! Save your money and find these headphones elsewhere.
Wrong Model Shipped August 14, 2009 Schultz (USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the HS500 headphones; I've had a pair for over 3 years. I wanted another pair because the foam was falling off. I ordered the exact same pair here, but received the SHS5200 instead. No one notified me that another model was shipped. I could have saved shipping by buying the SHS5200 locally, if that was indeed what I wanted. I am not happy.
