Sound good, Break easily, Horrible customer service March 15, 2010 Matthew A. Davis These headphones sound great for their size. This is the second pair of the AKG folding headphones that I have owned and i like the size and portability of them. The problem I have with them is that I was putting them on about 3 months after I got them and one of the headphones broke off of the headband. There is very little holding the phones to the headband, so I would imagine that this is not an uncommon problem. When I emailed AKG, they said that the warranty does not cover "broken" units. I cannot fathom what the warranty does cover if it does not cover breaking. They offered to replace them with a newer model for a charge, but when I responded to ask how much the charge would be, I never heard back. I liked theses headphones, but if AKG will not stand behind their product, I cannot recommend that anyone else buy them.
Great Cans Marred By Poor Plug March 9, 2010 wander (New York, NY USA) The K27i's are a great pair of headphones. They sound great, they fold-up nicely; I rather enjoyed them. That's past-tense. You see, they no longer work. And that's because for whatever reason, AKG decided to go with a long 1/8th male plug which is prone to stick out oddly from your personal listening device. And as anyone with a history of these elongated plugs knows, overtime they bend and twist from constant exposure to your inner jacket, for example, to the point where you're either getting sound out of one channel, or none at all.
To illustrate this long plug, I have taken a photo and will upload it along with this review.
I had the AKG model of headphones prior to the K27i's as well (the K26p). They were nearly identical, except they were silver/grey rather than white, and lacked the volume slider of the K27i. That pair of headphones snapped on an overseas trip from user error on my part. But the difference between the K27i and its fore-bearer was the earlier model had a nice, compact plug which did not stick out very far, and was not prone to bending whatsoever. It rested close to my ipod, horizontally. Whereas the K27i sticks up vertically -- way vertically.
You see, the long plug featured on the K27i will bend, and give. It is designed this way. This over time damages the sanctity of the internal wiring. If you have used headphones for a while, you may recall certain headsets where you have to jiggle the plug, or spin it around to get a proper stereo signal. This is what the K27i is prone to do from my experience. I've had it less than a year; about 10 months. I use them everyday.
It's disappointing because otherwise these are a great pair of headphones. If only AKG went back to the shorter, more compact 1/8th-inch plug.
By far the Best in this price range! February 26, 2010 Jeffrey Paoletti (Brooklyn, NY USA) Much better sound , especially the bass, than anything in this price range. I had the predecessor AKG26 which are essentially the same. I also have Koss portapro and those aren't even close to these, even though they have very high ratings.
The superior bass is made possible by the closed, on-ear cups. when you first put them on the bass may appear ordinary, like any other portable cans. But once you positition it in the sweetspot , the bass locks in and you'll never want to go back. This also provides a decent amount of isolation . The only drawback would be relatively snug fit. I've worn these on long flights and after 2 - 3 hours , you do feel them.
Nice replacement for K26P February 1, 2010 DougMac (Macon, GA USA) I've used the AKG K26P for a few years. Unfortunately, the earpads have come off and started to disintegrate and no replacements are available. I bit the bullet and upgraded to these K27i's. The price was right.
The good and unexpected news is they have improved on the great sound of the K26P's. I use Grado SR80's at home and these little headphones give them a run for the money.
These have a volume slider on the cord that works fairly well, but I don't use it. I think they are fairly comfortable, although they may seem a little tight at first. The fact they fold up and have their own little carrying case is a bonus.
These are the best sounding little headphones in their price range that I've heard. The bass is strong and clear without being overwhelming. The biggest improvement I've noticed is in the high's, these are more clear and detailed compared to the K26P's.
As always, Amazon's service is superb. I ordered Wednesday and were wearing them Friday night.
Compare to other AKG lineup January 25, 2010 J. Chuang (AL, USA) I have owned two other AKG headphones: the venerable K26Ps and some K81DJs. I actually bought the K81DJs to replace my K26Ps, which had the earpads wear out after 4 years of abuse. However, they soon proved too bulky to travel with, so I switched to the K27i (the K26P is discontinued)
When I first received the K27i, my first thought was that it was of lower quality than the K26P. However, when I went back and checked against the K26P, it just turns out the K81-DJ was better quality. However, the white color does not help it appear higher quality.
The earpads do seem a little bit lower quality. The padding is lumpier. Everything else seems about the same as the K26Ps, and those lasted 4 years.
The two major differences come in the headphone cord. One-the inline volume. This is actually very useful if you plan on ever using a headphone splitter. Because the K27is are low impedance, very likely you will have to deal with very high volumes while your friend must deal with low volumes. The slider can effectively double the impedance, making use with a splitter possible.
Sound quality is largely the same quality as the K26Ps. Isolation is obviously better on the K81DJs, but the K27i is no slouch.
So why the low ranking?
1. Design. It doesn't fold completely flat, just a few degrees off. the headband size adjuster is likely to pinch hair. The coloration is very off. it is obviously designed for a black and grey color scheme. The white makes it look more like a zebra.
2. Quality. Earcups will probably degrade in about 2 years-- they are lower quality than the K26Ps, which lasted 4. The earcups will detach from the headband (happened on my K26Ps). Then again, they are only 30 dollars and I do abuse my electronics.
3. Price. 35 dollars shipped. While I paid more for my K26Ps when I got them, for 50 dollars shipped you could upgrade to the K81DJ (which I maintain as a desk pair). For 35 dollars, there are similar options you can find in a store.
But in the end, I still own these. I use them for carrying around (the K81DJs are just a bit too large to stuff in a messenger bag). When I'm at my desk, I use the K81DJs instead. Better sound quality, because of the larger drivers. I just enjoy these headphones; They're more classic than earbuds (although the white kills me).
would I buy these again? If I were starting out, no. I'd look into some nice in-ears. But if you're settled on some old-school, closed back (sound doesn't leak out) headphones, these are probably the best in this price range.
